Portas PrepTutoring with Joe Portas
One-to-one tutoring for high school and college

Bring the problem you're stuck on.

I'm Joe. I help students with math, computer science, science, and SAT or ACT prep. We'll look at where you're getting lost and work through it together, with time to ask questions.

Sessions are online, or in person by arrangement. Students and parents are welcome to get in touch.

Subjects

What can I help you with?

Tell me the course and level, or which test you're preparing for. I'll check the material before we book a lesson.

SAT & ACT

Practice questions, timing, and reviewing mistakes. We'll use your current strengths and test date to decide what to work on.

Math

High school and college math. Bring the assignment or topic that's giving you trouble so we can work through the reasoning.

Computer science

Programming and CS coursework. We can trace a program, understand an algorithm, or work through a concept from class.

Science

High school and college science, depending on the course. Share the subject and syllabus so I can confirm whether I can help.

Getting started

We'll decide what to work on together.

You might need help with a test next month or a topic from this week's class. The first conversation helps me understand what you need and whether I can help.

  1. Tell me about the course or test

Share the subject, level, deadline, and what's been difficult. I'll check fit and availability, then suggest a session format and rate.

  2. Agree on the first session

We'll confirm the length, schedule, rate, payment timing, and cancellation terms in writing before lessons begin.

  3. Work through your material

Bring your questions and course materials. I'll ask you to explain your thinking, help with the sticking points, and leave you with something specific to practice.

  4. Check how it's going

You can pay per session, or choose a small prepaid bundle if we agree it makes sense. We'll adjust the focus as your needs change.

It's okay to ask me to explain it again.

I've worked with students as a peer tutor, computer science teaching assistant, and freelance tutor. I enjoy figuring out which part of a topic is confusing and finding another way to explain it.

You don't need to arrive with the right vocabulary or a perfectly formed question. Show me where you got stuck. We can start there and work toward solving the next problem on your own.

What should I bring?

Your course materials, a few questions, and any work you've already tried are useful. For test prep, a recent practice test can help us choose where to begin.
